The Classic Closet
Creating a classic closet allows you to become timeless in your wardrobe by collecting pieces that will never go out of style. These pieces can be mixed and matched with each other or with fashion that follows today’s trends.
Here are 15 pieces that you should add to your closet ASAP.
White Button Down Blouse
Whether paired with jeans or dress pants, a white button down top can effortlessly take you from work to leisure. You can even turn it into a comfy travel outfit ala Meghan Markle. Yes, please.
A black leather jacket might seem like an item you won’t wear very often. Trust me though; you will reach for this time and time again. Dress it up, dress it down, you will wear it all the time. To be more eco-friendly choose a faux-leather option.
Black Dress Pants
Black dress pants are a great way to dress up an outfit when jeans are a little too casual. Pair it with cardigans, button-downs, or blouses to create outfits suitable for every day of your work week.
Classic White Tee
A white tee is a staple that can be worn any time during the year. Go for an inexpensive brand in 100% cotton, since white tees can easily become unwearable. Crew neck or v-neck, either will do. Wear it on its own, or layered under your favorite cardigan. You just can’t go wrong with this piece.
A Little Black Dress
This one is kind of a no-brainer, but if you don’t have a little black dress in your closet get one now! It’s always nice to have a dress that looks amazing on you. Something you can reach for when you have last minute dinner reservation and instantly feel good about. The key with the LBD is to choose a classic cut, one that would fit in any decade instead of one that can be easily dated. That way it will be wearable now or in 10 years
A Dress Coat
Outwear in a classic trench or peacoat design can add a touch of class to any outfit. Wear it with jeans and a sweater, or over a dress for church. Choose a neutral camel or grey color that will work with any outfit.
Good Fitting Jeans
It doesn’t matter what cut you choose. Jeggings, skinny, boot cut, or flare, the main thing is that you choose a pair that fits you and your body shape. I genuinely believe that if your butt looks good in your jeans, your chances of having a good day go up.
A Fitted Blazer
You do not have to work in an office to rock a blazer. And you do not have wear 80’s shoulder pads either. When I put on a blazer with a flattering fit, I instantly feel a little more grown up and sophisticated. It’s an excellent choice for when it’s too warm for a heavy coat, or too cool to go without a jacket altogether.
Ballet flats give a little extra polish to an outfit without killing your feet. Choose pairs in neutral colors, such as brown and black, so that they can be paired with any look.
Delicate Jewelry That Goes From Day To Night
Statement jewelry can come and go with every outfit change, but a delicate piece belongs in every woman’s wardrobe. Pick something in a neutral tone that can come with any of your outfits. Thank of it as your signature piece, something you can wear every day and never get tired of.
Crew Neck Sweaters
I admittedly love crew neck sweaters. So much so that I wear them almost any day that I will be leaving the house, and the weather will be under 70º. You can pair them with jeans, leggings, or even dress pants. And they are a great way to quickly look put together, even if you only got dressed five minutes ago to pick up your kids from school.
Speaking of kids and school, raise your hand if you’ve ever taken your kids to school while still in your pajamas. Seriously, I do it so often that the teachers in the drop off line don’t even bat an eye. From experience though, you get a lot less side-eyes if you go through the line wearing matching pajamas.
A Sturdy Tote
A large tote looks a little more put together than a backpack, but it can still hold all of your things. I like to have one in brown and one in black so it can interchange with any outfit I wear. You can also pick one in a fun, bright hue, to wear as a statement piece.
Red lipstick makes you look younger and makes your teeth look whiter. What more could you ask for out of your makeup? Women with a fair complexion should reach for a red with cool undertones. While those with a medium complexion should try out a choice with an orange undertone, and women with dark complexions look great in a true red shade.
This might be a selection that you will only find on my list, but hear me out. Cheetah print provides a fun and edgy feel to your wardrobe when it’s worn right. Don’t deck yourself out in head to toe animal print, instead pick a single item. It could be a pair of ballet flats or a blouse paired with black slacks.
Get It On A Budget
One of the keys to creating a classic closet is to pick pieces that are made of good quality and will last you a for years. This sounds expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Buying quality clothing can come at an affordable price. Here’s how.
Buying new is not evil. Although many of the items in my closet are bought secondhand, I also have several items that have been purchased new. I will do this especially if I know the purchase is going to last me years on end.
When I do buy items off the rack, I just make sure to look for sales. One of my favorite ways to do this is to shop the end of season clearance for things like coats. I can often find them up to 60 or 70 percent off when I do this.
Don’t Be Afraid To Buy Used
Buying secondhand does not always mean buying cheap. I have found some amazing deals on J.Crew pants for over 66% off at secondhand retailers.
Check out your local thrift stores or Goodwill for discounted products, you just need to be willing to take your time and examine the products before you buy them. If you would rather shop online try Poshmark or Thredup. Poshmark is similar to ebay, but you don’t have to bid on your items. And Thredup is set up just like any other online retailer, you can even make returns unless otherwise stated on the item.
You Can Spend A Little Bit More
When an item is going to last you a decade or more, don’t be scared to splurge on it. Choose brands that are well-made and sturdy so that can handle being worn again and again. With how often you will wear these items chances are you will actually save money if you buy a more expensive item once compared to having to buy a cheaper piece again and again when it wears out.
The exception to this is a white tee, those tend to become unwearable very quickly.
